When 11-year-old Ty DeLisle, a Grade 6 student at Isabelle Sellon School, took a spelling test in his class, he never expected that he would be on his way to represent his school in a regional spelling bee.
“When I took the test, my teacher told me I was best in the class,” says DeLisle. With that result, he was on his way to Lethbridge to take part in the Canwest CanSpell Lethbridge Herald Southern Alberta Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 28.
“I was nervous,” the avid reader admits, “because it was my first one.”
DeLisle was one of 30 students, ages 9 to 14, taking part from schools across southern Alberta.
The winner of the regional contest would get to take part in the national spelling bee in Ottawa, and the winner of that |

would in turn be invited to take part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
DeLisle spelled several words correctly, including “access” and “bungalow”, before falling victim to “budgetary”. He says that based on the sound of the word, he figured it was spelled with an “i”.
He says that he had a lot of fun at the bee and would like to try again next year if he can.
The spelling bee took place at the Yates Memorial Theatre in Lethbridge, and included students from Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Vauxhall, Monarch, Nobleford, Pincher Creek, Coutts, Coaldale, Champion, Cardston, and Barnwell. The eventual winner was 11-year-old Tegan Odland of Enchant, Alberta.
