This last week I found myself doing something I never really thought I would ever end up doing –– I joined a volunteer board.
Along with several other community residents, I’ve become a member of the Boys and Girls Club board. They seemed to want me involved, and I’ve always been a supporter of their many activities and programs for local youths.
I’ve been hesitant in the past to join various groups and organizations in the Pass, for a couple reasons. The primary reason is that my job as a reporter does not come with what you would call a regular schedule.

I never know from one week to the next when I might be working on a weeknight or a weekend, and I don’t want to make an obligation to a group that I might not be able to fulfill. Thankfully the other board members say they won’t mind if I have to miss a meeting or two because of work.
The second reason is that as a reporter, I have at least some obligation to my readers to keep myself relatively free of entangling biases that could arise from being a member of one group or another.
