There’s no moat or drawbridge protecting this particular castle, but a group of area citizens is hoping to help bring some level of provincial protection to the Castle area between Waterton and the Crowsnest Pass.
The Castle Special Places working group consists of several area residents and stakeholders, and seeks to develop a proposal for legislated protection of the Castle area. On Tuesday, April 14, they presented the basics of their work to council.

“The Castle is not sustainable under the cumulative impacts there,” said Bill Paton, representing the group. Logging, mineral and oil exploration and extraction, and recreational users are some of the threats identified to the area.
The key, said Paton, is to find a balance between use and protection for the Castle area, protecting the ecology and biological diversity of the region while still allowing responsible access for recreational users. There are several levels of available protection that would slide the bar one way or another for this balance.
