After numerous delays through May, the Pass community pool opened on Friday, May 29, much to the joy of local children and swimmers.
Pool manager Colter Margetak says that the opening was first delayed because of new requirements on the pool’s drain covers. All of the covers had to be fitted with anti-entrapment covers, after a new law in the United States made them mandatory.
The US law, says Margetak, came into place after a young girl got stuck on a hot tub drain and drowned. Thousands of pools in the US will not open on time, he says, because the manufacturer of the anti-entrapment drain covers cannot keep up with the sudden demand. |
“They kept getting back ordered and back ordered,” says Margetak. The drains were originally scheduled to arrive before the May long weekend, the pool’s original projected opening date. When they did not arrive, the pool had to delay its opening date.
Once the covers arrived and were installed, the pool’s chlorination system malfunctioned. Margetak says that this has now been fixed as well, and the pool is now expected to remain open through the rest of the summer.
