The 40th anniversary of the Southern Alberta Summer Games is set to be the biggest celebration of the summer, with sports and entertainment events over four full days –– and it’s right around the corner, commencing on Wednesday, July 8. But in order to make the Games the best experience possible for all participants, and to show off more of our community spirit, the Games organizers are seeking more volunteers for some of their 40 events.
Amy Boeckner, Summer Games Coordinator, says that approximately 100 people will be volunteering every day during the Games. These volunteers will help events run smoothly for the 1500 participants who have registered to date –– a greater number than two years ago, the last time the Pass hosted the Games.
Volunteers are needed specifically for track and field, the five- and ten-K runs, road cycling, mountain biking, beach volleyball, tennis, indoor rock climbing, and soccer. |
Volunteers will help with various things, such as writing or carrying information, and being available to help athletes if needed along a race course.
Boeckner says that if people want to volunteer for a different event instead, they will be accommodated, as everyone is welcome and all volunteers will be appreciated. There are also volunteer positions available in non-sport areas, and currently a number of people are needed as medical volunteers. Anyone with level one first aid and CPR training is welcome.
“All volunteers receive a free t-shirt,” adds Boeckner, “and are invited to all festivities.” Volunteers are also entered into a draw for Keith Urban concert tickets.
Volunteer application forms are available at the municipal office in Coleman, at the Summer Games office on the second floor of the M.D. McEachern in Bellevue, and online.
