When it comes to endurance, local mountain bike riders Andrew Fairhurst and Jeff Smith have proven they have it in spades, placing among the best in the world at the 2009
24 Hours of Adrenalin World Solo Championships.
With 150 athletes from throughout the world, this event brought some of the best mountain bike riders to Canmore on July 25 and 26, for a competition that hurts the legs just to think about. The goal of the event was to ride the most times around a 17.7 km bike course in 24 hours, facing heat, physical strain, and 1645 feet of elevation gain per lap.
Fairhurst placed 11th overall and first in his category, World Age Group 30-34 Men. He finished 18 laps of the course in 23 hours, 32 minutes, 28 seconds. He placed fifth among all Canadians in the race.
Smith, who was competing in a 24-hour race for the first time, placed 25th overall, completing 15 laps in 23 hours, 45 minutes, 11 seconds. He was second in his category, World Age Group 25-29 Men. He placed tenth among all Canadians.
"All in all it was a fantastic experience," says Fairhurst, who as an organizer of the Sinister 7, along with the Full Moon and Half Moon adventure races, is no stranger to endurance events. "It's certainly physically, and probably more so mentally, very demanding. It was certainly challenging. We're very glad we did it."
