While the progress of the legal dispute between the
Municipality of Crowsnest Pass and the
Chinook Educational Consortium remains unknown, council has voted in favour of several big changes at the community facility.
After an in camera session at their meeting on Tuesday, September 15, each of the four councillors who have opposed the status quo at the Centre had a motion to make that will alter the facility’s future.
Councillor Dean Ward moved that the municipality assert control of management and operation of the Centre in order to mitigate any further liability to the municipality. The motion was passed by a 4-2 vote, Mayor John Irwin and Councillor Larry Mitchell opposed.
In essence, this means that the Crowsnest Centre Society will no longer be charged with operating the facility. The Centre will instead be governed directly by the municipality.
What effect this will have on the facility’s operational budget remains to be seen.
To accompany this change, Councillor David Cole moved that council honour all currently confirmed bookings at the Centre. The motion was passed.
