Things are getting a little greener at the Crowsnest-Pincher Creek Landfill, thanks to an upgrade and a new public awareness focus on recycling, and changes on the ground to make the landfill more accessible to the average resident.
On Saturday, September 19, the landfill held a grand opening for their updated recycling facilities. The event was attended by several hundred people throughout the day.
“We’ve upgraded or updated our recycling facilities,” says Emile Saindon, Landfill Manager. “We take pretty well everything we can recycle, to stop it from going into the landfill.”
The landfill has been recycling what it can the last two years, he says, but are now raising awareness of what they can recycle, and making it easier for people to access the landfill.

It was harder to pull recyclable items out of the general waste, he says, and if people can bring items directly to the landfill it will work better.
The landfill typically pulls 1500 to 2000 tonnes of recycling material per year, says Saindon.
“We’ve made a lot of changes here in the last six months,” he adds. The landfill has been cleaned up, and the mud has been reduced to make it much easier for smaller vehicles to easily access the landfill and the recycling facilities.
Items that can be recycled at the landfill include electronic waste such as televisions, computers, and keyboards. Residents can recycle used oil and antifreeze, used oil filters, dead vehicle batteries, paint, refrigerators, propane tanks, pesticides, and herbicides. Numerous metal items can also be recycled, along with tires.
