Less than a month into 2010, with no official proposal yet received to run the facility, council has gone back on its previous commitment to honour all bookings at the Crowsnest Centre, and has essentially pulled the plug on the beleaguered building.
Council has been in negotiations with the Centre Society over the future of the assets within the facility that are owned by the Society. The Society, after being removed from operating the Centre in December, gave the municipality first purchase option on the assets, which include kitchen equipment, tables, chairs, office equipment, beds, and more.
The Society puts the original value of all these items at a total of $195,000, and reportedly offered them to the municipality at 30 cents on the dollar, less what the Society still owes the municipality. The municipality has stated that the Society owes them approximately $35,000.

Doing the math, this works out to $58,500 for all of the assets, less the debt, for a total in cash of approximately $23,500. This figure is unconfirmed.
On Tuesday, January 19, council rejected this offer, deciding not to purchase these assets. Councillor Dean Ward made a motion to allow the Society to secure their assets and liquidate them through an auction to be hosted at the Centre within the next 60 days. The motion passed by a 4-3 vote.
Councillor Ward also moved that bookings at the Centre be honoured up to the date of the auction, and that all bookings after that date be provided the option of using other municipal facilities. The motion passed by a 4-3 vote.
The Centre Society has scheduled an auction of all their assets at the Crowsnest Centre on Saturday, February 6. Proceeds from the auction will go toward paying off their debts. The Society is obligated to pay off the remaining debts before they dissolve as a society.
