The Crowsnest Pass Herald has been a fixture in the community since 1930, a locally owned and operated newspaper bringing weekly news and opinions to more than 2000 regular readers.
This summer, the Pass Herald is celebrating its 80th anniversary. To put it in perspective, this makes the Pass Herald the third-oldest surviving business in the Crowsnest Pass, behind only Graymont (the limestone business at Crowsnest Lake) and Morency Plumbing and Heating (which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year).
To celebrate the occasion, the Pass Herald will publish a special commemorative issue this summer, featuring highlights of the last 80 years of community and world events that we've been here to report on.
In addition, the Pass Herald is hosting an open house at the Lions Pride Hall in Blairmore on Saturday, July 31, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to drop by and talk to the staff of the Herald, including longtime owners Buddy Slapak and Gail Sygutek.
The open house will feature displays of photos and newspapers from throughout the Herald's history, with papers stretching back as far as the 1930s. We will celebrate with a special birthday cake. |
The Pass Herald has been collecting old papers and Pass Herald memorabilia over the past several months, and we are still interested in more.
If you have an old paper or something connected to the Herald, we would love if you would share it with us for the open house. All items will be returned afterward.
We are also seeking individuals who have worked for the Pass Herald over the years, as paper carriers or in other capacities. We invite you to share your stories with us and attend the open house to celebrate this special anniversary with us.
To contact the Pass Herald, call 403-562-2248, or email us at passherald@shaw.ca.
