With students scheduled to start their first day of the new school year on Monday, August 30, teachers and staff were in full swing during the week before, preparing to brighten the minds of a new crop of students in 2010 and 2011.
At
Horace Allen School, Elaine Garner has now been officially named Principal, dropping the "Acting" portion of her title. She will be aided by a new Assistant Principal, Myrna Dembicki, who comes to the Pass from the Palliser School Division in Lethbridge.
In addition to her principal duties, Mrs. Garner will be teaching music this year along with Mrs. Becky Pichurski.
The school will continue its focus on literature, working with the
Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation throughout the year. In September they will read Recess Queen, a book with lessons about bullying.
Later this year, Horace Allen will host a puppetry residency thanks to a grant from the
Alberta Foundation of Arts. A puppeteer will stay at the school and work with students, while puppetry will be integrated into numerous curriculum areas.
At
Isabelle Sellon School, new Principal Paul Pichurski will be joined by new Assistant Principal Marnie Davidson on the administrative team. Two new teachers are also joining the regular staff –– LaDawn Funk as a Grade Four teacher and Jonina Mills as the French and Art teacher.
Pichurski says that the school will continue with its plans and goals, such as infusing technology into its classrooms and getting the kids to interact with the technology rather than simply watching the teacher use technology.
