Workers head back with new contract
 
Union workers at Teck Coal's Coal Mountain mine, located just west of the BC-Alberta border, which includes as many as 100 workers living in Crowsnest Pass, are back on the job following the successful resolution of a 54-day strike.
Nic Milligan, Manager of Community and Governmental Affairs for Teck Coal, said that he was unable to provide the details of the new contract, but that the matter has been resolved.
Milligan says that Teck Coal and the union met with a mediator again on September 25, and the two sides arrived at a tentative agreement late that evening.
 
The agreement still needed to be upheld by the membership of the union, who were polled over the next several days.
"That agreement was ratified by the membership on Tuesday (September 28)," says Milligan.
"We're delighted," he says, "and commend both negotiating teams for bridging the gap and reaching this agreement."
The workers were back on the job as of Wednesday, September 29, as things return to normal at Coal Mountain. The strike action initially began on August 6, following eight months of unsuccessful negotiations without a contract in place.
