The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition Night at the Elks Hall in Blairmore on Thursday, October 7, and honoured one of the community's most deserving volunteers with a special recognition.
The 2010 Order of Crowsnest Pass, a sort of lifetime achievement award acknowledging contributions to the community, was presented to a surprised Aggie Mitchell.
"This is a little overwhelming," said Mitchell, accepting the award from Mayor John Irwin as the full house at the Elks Hall stood and applauded. "But it sure feels special. Thank you very much."
Mitchell says that she had no idea she had been chosen for the Order of Crowsnest Pass. "It's an honour," she says.
Aggie Mitchell has held many roles in the community. She has been chair of the local Police Advisory Committee, a past president of the Kinette Service Club, and a manager and a player on local ladies' hockey teams. She teaches first aid and CPR for St. John's Ambulance, of which she has served as local president, and she has spent three years as a Provincial Nursing Officer and three years as a National Nursing Officer for that organization. |

Mitchell spent three years on the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses' conduct board, and volunteers with the Sinister 7, Half Moon, and TransRockies races. She is also a cancer survivor who serves the Alberta Cancer Society as a counsellor across much of southern Alberta.
"I've always volunteered," she says. "It's good to volunteer. It's quite rewarding. It's rewarding to the heart."
Mitchell encourages anyone to volunteer their time for something they believe in. She says that a lot of local functions wouldn't be possible without the work of volunteers.
The volunteer recognition event featured entertainment from Hoja, and a free dinner for all attendees. The annual event honours volunteers in the community, both those who attend the dinner and those who were unable to make it.
"Let's face it," said Mayor Irwin at the event, "volunteers are the backbone of this community. To all of you, to all of you in this room, thank you, thank you, thank you very much."
