Since mid October, drop in ladies’ indoor soccer has been in full swing at the Albert Stella Memorial Arena in Blairmore, where women can come let off some steam every week.
Members of the local outdoor soccer league approached the municipality in the summer to see if they could hold a weekly women’s soccer club through the winter months, in order to keep activity and exercise up.
“There aren’t a lot of opportunities for physical activity for women in the area,” said Shannon Hamilton, one of the players and organizers. “This is just an opportunity to come out and have fun, kick the ball around, and get out of the house.”
It runs every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and is open to players of any skill level.
“There is no experience required,” said Hamilton, who just began playing the sport last June. “People assume soccer is one of those sports where you have to be really athletic and skilled, but you don’t.”
The evenings begin with a 20-30 minute warm up, followed by four 10-15 minute games, depending on the number of women who come out to play.
There is a $5 drop in fee for anyone who would like to play, in order to cover the costs of using the facility. |
“We’re just trying to build up a really good team and have some fun,” said Hamilton.
The team will play against a ladies team from Fernie on January 20th, and also has a co-ed night once a month with students from the Nippon Institute of Technology.
Additional teams exist in Pincher Creek, Sparwood and Fernie, and players hope to compete against these other teams soon.
The season runs until April, and outdoor soccer resumes in May at the field at Isabelle Sellon School.
Anyone interested in playing is encouraged to show up with running shoes, shin pads if available, and a sweater for when it’s cold out.
