Councillor Andrew Saje submitted a notice of motion to Council at the March 1st meeting, requesting that Administration develop a shuttle service to transport residents to indoor pool facilities in neighbouring communities.
Saje said the recommendation came in response to a combination of comments and feedback from citizens who would like to see such a service offered for Crowsnest Pass residents, who do not have an indoor pool at their disposal.
Indoor pools are available in the communities of Pincher Creek, Sparwood, Fernie and Elkford, and Saje said that aside from building a new facility in the Crowsnest Pass, transporting swimmers to one of these facilities would serve as the best way of providing residents with that kind of programming.
“This is an important part of what citizens want in the Crowsnest Pass,” said Saje. “There may be a solution other than putting up the bricks and mortar.”
He said this will also serve as a way of providing Council and Administration with statistical information regarding the demand for such a facility in town. |
In his notice of motion, Saje wrote that due to declining population in the community, a new indoor facility cannot be constructed until the stabilization of sustainability is achieved.
He said a shuttle service to neighbouring facilities would provide an interim solution while the municipality assesses the need for a future recreation centre, which would take three to five years to construct.
Saje asked that Administration contact neighbouring communities and propose the creation of a collaborative fall to spring indoor pool and recreation program using a shuttle service from the Crowsnest Pass to their facility.
He also asked Administration to contact all major employers, such as the mines, and all potential contributing organizations to receive financial commitments covering the costs of buses, labour, maintenance, and program fees.
Chief Administrative Officer Tully Clifford told Saje he was confident Administration could address the issue within the time frame identified, and come back to Council with their findings by May 25th.
