The Crowsnest Pass Thunder Pee Wee A Team were named Spud League and Division Champions following their second win against the Raymond Ice on Friday, March 18th.

Following their win against the Raymond Ice on Friday, March 19th, the Crowsnest Pass Thunder Pee Wee A team were named Spud League and Division Champions.
This was the team’s 23rd straight win of the season, in which they went undefeated in regular league play.
The team participated in a final practice last Wednesday, March 24th, where they had a pizza party and celebrated a season of hard work and big payoff.
“It was one heck of a season with one heck of a team, and I was just glad to be a part of it,” said the team’s coach, Chris Chomyn.
He said the players were all hungry to win this year, after both age groups made it to provincials in the past two years, but ultimately fell short of the goal.
“We set our goals at the beginning of the year... and one of their main goals was to win Spud League,” said Chomyn. “They knew what it would take to get first, and they did it.”
He said he was impressed with the way each player performed this season, and that each one got the coaches’ attention at some point.
“One of the greatest things about coaching is you get to see a new shining star every game,” he said. “Each kid did at least one thing that wowed the coaches every game.”

He said it was very meaningful to the team and to their coaches to win league and division championships this year.
“I’ve had these kids since they were five and six years old,” said Chomyn. “They’re a very special group to me.”
“They all have the same goals, focus, and work ethic, and when you have a team like that, a lot of good things are going to happen.”
When it comes to the issue of what comes next for this team, Chomyn said he hopes the community will be able to form a bantam team so the players can continue to play at home.
He added there is also a possibility of Pincher Creek and the Pass pooling together to form a collective bantam team, but that players will also try out for Double A teams outside of the community.
“Unfortunately, once we hit Bantam, there’s usually no opportunity for a team in the Crowsnest Pass,” he said. “Hopefully they can get something together next year so these kids can all come back and play together like they always have.”
