A group of conservation enthusiasts and area residents gathered at
Spray Lake Sawmills’ annual open house on Thursday, May 5th, to protest the company’s plans to log much of the
Castle Special Management Area.
At the open house, SLS provided the public with maps detailing their preliminary harvest plans an annual operating plan, as well as addressing area activities and usages, critical wildlife corridors, watersheds, and types of vegetation.
“The information provides a snapshot for today and for years to come,” said SLS Woodlands Manager Gord Lehn. “We are providing an opportunity for people to look at the maps and voice any questions or concerns they may have.”
Some of the protesters’ main concerns included disruption of critical grizzly bear habitat in the Castle, watershed issues, and deforestation.
