“I was definitely the happiest girl in the world at that moment,” said Valiquette, who has been singing for as long as she can remember. “It was a great feeling and so much weight was lifted off of my shoulders.”
Following two hours of performances of three songs each the final seven contestants, judges Daryl Ferguson, Deserie Michalsky and Michele Dobek-Koinberg deliberated for more than 30 minutes to choose the four best singers and the overall winner.
Fourth place was awarded to Codie Sinclair of Pincher Creek.
Third place and a prize of $500 from Devon Canada went to singer-songwriter Michel Blais of Crowsnest Pass.
Coming in second place, Coleman resident Cierra Shortreed took home $1,000 sponsored by the Blairmore Lions Club.
Valiquette won $2,000 sponsored by Teck, something she says she was in great need of.
“I decided I wanted to do this (competition) because I thought it would be fun, and a great experience,” said the 21-year-old, adding with a laugh, “and I really needed the money.”
Valiquette said she was nervous going into the competition in April, as she didn’t know what to expect from her competitors.
