Construction to replace a portion of the AltaLink 170L line which runs through Crowsnest Pass is set to begin this week.
The portion of the line that will be worked on first is near Blairmore, and will be rebuilt in the same location it is in now, according to AltaLink’s Manager of Project Communications Leanne Niblock.
“This work needs to be done to ensure the reliability of the power system in the area,” said Niblock. “Rebuilding the transmission line will allow us to better perform routine and emergency maintenance.”
She said the project would begin with cutting the line and removing it by helicopter, which will fly through the line’s right of way and then lay the line down at a secure location out of town.
Niblock said no disruption of power is anticipated, as AltaLink will be relying on power from a BC Hydro line that comes through the Pass.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure there is no disruption to the power supply,” said Niblock. “We are working with Fortis and BC Hydro to try and mitigate any reliability issues.”
She said the construction should take roughly six weeks.
The other two portions of line near Frank will also be prepared for construction, which will not begin until next year.
Niblock said AltaLink is currently working with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development to identify and mitigate any environmental impacts the construction poses.
