The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass was recently selected as a recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Province of Alberta’s FireSmart Community Grant program.
FireSmart is a provincial initiative which encourages forest communities to reduce the risk of wildfires through measures such as using fire-resistant materials on buildings and following simple landscaping practices.
“The FireSmart Community Grant program allows provincial and municipal governments to work together to minimize the risk of wildfire to Albertans and their communities,” said Alberta Sustainable Resource
Development (SRD) Assistant Deputy Minister, Forestry Division Bruce Mayer in a letter to Council.
Municipal Chief Administrative Officer Myron Thompson said the majority of the grant will be used for contracting services, with a portion also being allocated for a community education program.
According to Thompson, approximately 12 agencies across Western Canada are listed as credited contractual services in this area of FireSmart, and the Municipality will select one to assist in education programs and coordination of activities which will help protect homes and the community from wildfires.
