Mining Week is upon us, May 13th to 19th, and to celebrate the province’s largest and oldest industry activities are set up for everyone to take part.
Hosted by Teck and the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce, free mine tours began on Monday, with tourists and residents alike headed to Teck’s Greenhill Operations.
The days to follow saw tours in the four neighbouring Teck Coal mines, with Line Creek on Tuesday and Coal Mountain, Elkview and Fording River over the next four days.
The tours will provide everyone involved the opportunity to see how steelmaking coal is produced and learn about mining from exploration to production and reclamation. |
“The buses really filled up this year and will be headed to all of the different mine sites each day,” noted Chamber of Commerce Manager John Himel. “People will be coming in from all over the place with buses leaving from Fernie, Crowsnest Pass and as far away as Creston.”
All participants are asked to arrive at the Chamber for 10:30 a.m. with a packed lunch for the full morning tour.
Falling in conjunction with the provincial celebrations was the 91st annual Mine Rescue and First Aid Competitions hosted at the new Elkford Fire Training Facility on May 12th with the awards banquet to follow later in the evening in Fernie.
