Canada Day long weekend saw both smiles and tears, as the hot and sunny weekend was the setting for both a fun and successful festival, and two sad- deadly even- events.
The weekend, as usual, had thousands of tourists drive by and already by Friday morning, cars were driving down Highway 3 nearly bumper to bumper.
Around fifteen tickets were handed out by Fish and Wildlife over the weekend, as well as three warnings. A Fish and Wildlife representative said that it was “one of the busiest weekends ever.”
Sergeant Keith Bott from Crowsnest Pass RCMP said that although Canada Day long weekend is not nearly as busy as May long weekend, this one was still a fairly busy one for the Pass.
On Friday, June 29th, a motor vehicle collision fatality occurred south of Hillcrest Mines on Adanac road. A 52 year-old female from Lundbreck died on the scene, and another was left with life-threating injuries. |

“If you’re going to be drinking, don’t drive,” said Sergeant Bott.
“People should have zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Things got a little out of control this past weekend, and it ended badly,” said Bott.
On Sunday, the community of Coleman hosted the Canada Day parade with games and activities and the day was considered a “huge success” by Bott.
“It was excellent and we had a good turnout,” he said. “We wore our colours proudly.”
On Sunday, July 1st, a physical confrontation took place in Coleman, involving two locals and a bylaw officer, leaving the officer with injuries.
The confrontation was broken up by witnesses standing nearby.
Although the matter is still under investigation, the conflict is considered to be a serious one, and rare for the Pass.
