There is a new doctor in town. Dr. Ian Sudbury is Crowsnest Pass’ newest medic, joining the team at Mountainside Medical Clinic in Blairmore.
Originally, Sudbury came to Mountainside Medical Clinic in September to fill in on maternity leave and was only to stay for four months. However, when December came, he decided to make the Crowsnest Pass his home and to stay at Mountainside permanently.
Sudbury was born in Salmon Arm, British Columbia and moved to Victoria, B.C. to receive an honours degree in molecular biology from the University of Victoria. He then moved to Calgary for medical training and residency at the University of Calgary. After living in Calgary for five years, Sudbury moved to Coleman.
“I think the Crowsnest Pass is a great place to live,” said Sudbury. “People in the area are very friendly and welcoming.”
Sudbury takes advantage of the mountainous terrain that surrounds the Crowsnest Pass by snowboarding, hiking, snowmobiling and wakeboarding. He calls himself very outdoorsy and feels privileged to be living in a place that is surrounded by the great outdoors.
Contrary to how many people feel about the Crowsnest Pass, Sudbury finds the area quite busy. He explained that the doctor-patient ratio in the area is unbalanced, making for full workdays, but even still, working here is better than a lot of other places. “Relationships with patients are more personal and that’s rare in a city,” he said.
