Upon hearing the news that Devon Canada will be donating the Pass Powderkeg ski area to the Crowsnest Pass community, I couldn’t help but to be pleasantly surprised by the good news. In the recent months that have come and gone in the Crowsnest Pass, it seems as though there has been an abundant amount of negative news for the media sources of the community to report on.
It is easy to find the problems with every change that comes to a community, and even easier to complain about it but when good news does come to the community, especially a community that has undergone an excessive amount of turmoil and havoc, it call for reason to celebrate.
Contrary to the popular believe that newspapers love and even thrive off negativity, writing a feel good story is always more satisfying that writing a story that is bound to upset someone.
I was extremely surprised upon arrival in the Crowsnest Pass of the of the negatively in the community.
Much of it I found to be understandable but still a large portion of it I found to be unnecessary and unwarranted. I went through a period of time when I found it relieving to escape to Calgary to see my family and old friends, as I was beginning to find being in the Crowsnest Pass was stressful, even when I was off duty.
However, the bright and smiling faces of the so many of the people I see on the streets and in local businesses kept me coming back, ready to do my job reporting on local news- good or bad. There has been a lot of changes in the municipality recently, one being the major talk of the town- the coal mining site, and a Co-op to be opened in the community yet I still find that people are putting a negative on these news stories.
On February 2nd, Devon will be hosting a Family Day celebration to commemorate the generous donation of the skill hill and its area to the community. What a wonderful opportunity to gather as a community and celebrate the good news.
The day will include discounted lift tickets, a free BBQ and ski themed prizes. Participation is key for events like this and I think that this community needs a reason to celebrate some good news. I will see you there.
