The King and Queen of Castle earned their crowns at Castle Mountain. Janelle Miller’s fastest race time won her the crown title of Queen of Castle, while her older brother, Rob Miller came in second to win the King of the Castle title. At this annual fundraising event, ski racers race the challenger of their choice down the Whiskey Jack run. Profits go to fund the West Castle Ski Club. This year they set a record with 95 racers doubling the usual amount of registrants on March 23.
The Miller’s have won these titles before as their names are inscribed numerous times on the trophy. Janelle Miller both raced with the ski club and coached. Janelle was on the New Zealand National ski team for a few years. She helps out he ski club by subbing for coaches when she’s not busy studying in Lethbridge.
The Family Category winners were the Miller family - Vicky, Dennis, Rob and Janelle. Mary Rast was the youngest competitor at four year old.
Rob Miller added, “Traditionally, this (race) is where parents realize their kids are faster (skiers) than them.”
Almost important as the glass trophy with winners names engraved, are the bragging rights. Legends can be found at Castle as former Queen (in her age category) in 1996, Kirsti Skaret was hitting the high slopes that day.
Allen Rees, event organizer commented, “A number of firsts: the first time all members of one family each won their age category, the King, the Queen and the family category; the first time a Calgary based race club entered their racers; the first time the King and Queen competitors raced-off against each other; the first time two members of the same family raced off against each for the top title; the first time we had over 60 registered competitors.”
The age category winners are as follows:
