The Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis will be taking place in the Crowsnest Pass this year- for the first time ever.
The walk, which will be called the Crowsnest Pass Great Strides Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis, will take place on May 26th, at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue.
The walk will be organized and lead by Bill and Jenny Wilmot, parents of Libbey and Finley, both with cystic fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis, often shorted to CF, is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, liver and intestine from the build-up of mucus. The current medium life expectancy for those with CF is 40.
Libbey, 9, has participated in annual walks to cure cystic fibrosis for ten years consecutively, in Calgary and Lethbridge. Bill and Jenny decided that for her tenth walk, they would organize a local walk so she can do it with friends and family.
“Her first walk at two months old in Calgary in a stroller,” said father Bill. “She has done it every year since then.”
The walk will go on rain or shine and has the goal of raising $10,000 for FC research. The Wilmot family said they are already half way there.
“The support we have already received is hard to believe and we appreciate all the help we have been given so far,” he said.
“It will be fun for the whole family,” said Bill. “It will be an opportunity for everyone to get together and have some fun for a good cause.”
The three km walk through Fireman’s Park will be followed by a free BBQ, and games. The BBQ and free t-shirts are sponsored be Teck. .
The Wilmot family has lived in the Pass for five years and currently reside in Bellevue.
Libbey said she is looking forward to walking with her friends in the Pass.
For the walk, Libbey will be on a team with her two brothers, Finley and Edison. The team will be called the Three Little Crows.
“I’m excited to have the walk here at home,” said Libbey, who has had CF her whole life and takes an average of 25 pills a day due to the illness.
“Walking every year is very important,” she said. I’m very excited for this year.”
