Despite the thousands of cars driving on Highway 3 throughout the weekend, Fish and Wildlife and RCMP agree that this past May Long Weekend was a considerably quieter one.
Crowsnest Pass RCMP wrote a total of 185 tickets- 135 of those were driving tickets.
There were no major motor vehicle accidents or fires during the weekend.
Local RCMP had a helicopter which patrolled the area of Crowsnest Pass with six extra RCMP members who came to the municipality for the weekend.
Fish and Wildlife Officer John Clarke said that numbers of tickets he issued were also down this year, most likely because of the weather.
“Numbers were definitely lower than previous years,” said Clarke. “And that’s probably because of the rain. People don’t want to leave their campsites when the weather is poor.”
Clarke did say that a major issue officers face following the May Long Weekend is garbage left behind at campsites. “It wasn’t bad this year as it has been in the past,” he said.
Clarke explained that they talk to campers throughout the weekend them reminding that they are on public property and garbage left on the ground is considered litter.
Throughout the long weekend, Crowsnest Pass Fish and Wildlife issued 26 traffic safety act tickets, three gaming and liquor violation tickets, one wildlife act ticket and two public lands administration regulations tickets.
