It will be a busy summer this year at the Coleman Legion, including the introduction of two new projects that have just recently been presented.
One is the Merit Gallery, a wall in the Legion that has been dedicated to plaques that can be mounted on the wall. The plaques can either be in memory of a deceased loved one, or donated in honour of a family member or a friend.
The person remembered or honoured does not have to be a legion member and plaque hanging is open to all members of the community.
“The wall is to give recognition to the people of our community who might not have been otherwise recognized,” said Kate Kollee from the Coleman Legion.
Plaques are sold for $100 each.
Another project that will be undergone at the Legion is a raffle draw, with a $1,000 prize. 500 tickets will be printed for the draw, and will be sold for $10 each. The draw will be made at the Coleman Legion’s Fashion Show, which will be held on October 20th.
The Fashion Show, which will feature clothing from Neat “N Nifty, Bonnie’s Fashions and Exhilarate, will be the Coleman Legion’s first fashion show.
Another thing new to the Legion this year is a Sunday brunch currently being planned for September 14th, at the Legion.
“Our fundraising committee takes a bit of a break over the summer, which is why there are fewer events,” said Kollee.
She explained that other than members taking part in summer parades and the Canada Day celebrations held in Coleman, there isn’t as much occurring at the Legion in the summer than as other parts of the year.
An organizing committee has recently been introduced at the Legion, which started in February of this year. So far, the committee has planned, or is in the process of planning four major events, including A Pig Roast, which took place two weekends ago, the Brunch, the $1,000 raffle draw and the Fashion Show.
“We want to give back to the community as much as we possibly can,” said Kollee. “It’s part of our heritage after all.”
Membership fees for the Legion are $34 for seniors and $40 for adults. Legion membership is not required to participate in Legion hosted events.
