The Crowsnest Pass Governance and Priorities committee meeting took place on September 17 at the Crowsnest Pass municipal office.
Rum runner Days
“It was more work than expected but, the entire experience was more positive, than I had expected as well,” said Penny Warris, volunteer co-ordinator for Rum Runner days.
Warris made her presentation to Crowsnest Pass municipal council during the September 17th GPC meeting.
Events such as; The Taste of Crowsnest, the Sole Survivor Foot Race and the Show and Shine all contributed to the success of Rum Runner days, according to Warris.
The Taste of Crowsnest was extremely successful raking in an additional $3200 on top of the additional expenses the group paid for themselves, Warris told municipal council.
Sole Survivor brought out 200 participants who pressed through an initial rainy start to create an event enjoyed by everyone, said Warris.
The Show and Shine car show drew 83 registered participants, according to Warris.
“Of note is that 74% of them came from outside Crowsnest Pass,” she said and added the winner came all the way from Thompson, Manitoba.
Brian and Joni MacFarlane organized The Show and Shine this year, according to Warris.
The MacFarlanes, (along with a group of local car enthusiasts) started a group known as the Wheel Nuts, said Warris.
“My recommendation would be to give The Wheel Nuts the $1300 profit they made to help establish a solid base for their club,” Warris said.
Warris would like to see all of the same attractions from this year (including the children’s festival and parade) return for the next year.
Disaster Recovery
The first step in the process to fix the damages from the June floods was taken when funding bids for the disaster recovery closed, September 19th, according to Frank Besinger, Director of Planning, Engineering and Operations for the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.
Besinger made a report to Crowsnest Pass municipal council of the disaster recovery funding process.
“Once the funding bids close, then there is an evaluation (of the bids) a contract is awarded, we mobilized the construction crews,” Besinger told the Pass Herald.
“We’re hoping to have a group working in three weeks,” he said.
Damage from the heavy rains and floods spread throughout the community- from one end of the Municipality of the Crowsnest Pass to the other, according to Besinger.
