Speeding drivers beware; the municipality has purchased a multiuse road sign with the ability to photograph passing vehicles.“You see that camera in it that’s already set,” said Steve Munshaw, manager of protective services for the Crowsnest Pass. “[It] could take a photo imagery of that vehicle passing at a high speed and then you’re able to then retrieve some traffic dollars from that.”
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, council approved the purchase of a Multi-Purpose Radar and Message Board Sign for about $12,400 plus tax. Munshaw says these signs cost around $22,000 retail but the municipality is receiving a 45 per cent discount because they are going with a one-year-old demo that has gone to trade shows.
The sign can be programmed via the “cloud” using a Bluetooth device. Along with its ticket issuing abilities, it can also be used to alert drivers to road closures, warnings or community events.
