On Sunday, March 16, a serious incident occurred at Teck’s Coal Mountain Operation near Sparwood that resulted in the death 59-year old Myles Lorenz of Coleman.
Lorenz was a Service man for the Maintenance Department at the mine.
"Mr. Lorenz was filling his truck with water when he was impacted by frozen rock which fell from a separate vehicle," the coroners office said in a written statement.
"He was transported to hospital in Blairmore, but he could not be resuscitated," the statement continued.
The Coroners Service, the Provincial Inspector of Mines and the RCMP continue to investigate the death and Lorenz’s family has been notified.
In a company release, Nic Milligan, Manager, Community and Aboriginal Affairs, says no other employees were injured.
It was reported that Bill Bennett, B.C.'s Minister of Energy and Mines, said an investigation has been launched in partnership with other agencies.
Milligan wrote that the company is extending its sincerest condolences to Lorenz’s family, friends and colleagues.
The family of Mr. Lorenz has asked for privacy.
Teck runs 5 open pit coal mining operations in the Elk Valley. The Coal Mountain Operation is located about 45 kilometers from Crowsnest Pass.
