Courtney Cann, who lives in the Crowsnest Pass and works as an educator in Pincher Creek, started growing out her hair three years ago so she could donate it to make a wigs for cancer sufferers.
The kind act had been on her bucket list.
But after learning about Joceyln, a young mother who tragically died of cancer at a young age, leaving two young children, Eloise 2 and a half and Peter 4 years old, her motivation changed.
“Jocelyn ended her battle with cancer just over a year ago and is now resting with God. I barely knew her. In fact, I only heard of her battle with cancer when her husband, Isaacs, started a fundraiser on YouCaring to help cover their medical bills. At the time, I was living half way across the world and yet, for some strange reason, she and her life inspired me into dedicated prayer and meditation. How is it that a person I had only met once, whose children I didn't know and whose husband I had last spoken to about 5 years previous could have such an impact? To this day, my only answer to this question is that she was here on this earth to make a difference and both her life and death served this purpose.”
When Jocelyn passed, Cann’s new motive for cutting her hair became that of raising money for the children.
Jocelyn’s husband, Isaacs, prefered that any money raised in honour of Jocelyn be donated to an organization that would help as many people as possible as they themselves had been helped when they were going through their battle.
“We agreed on the Alberta Cancer Foundation , a forward thinking organization with a strong focus on cancer prevention and whose donated money makes a large impact on cancer research and helping those facing the challenges of cancer right now,” he said.

“Please help me carry on Jocelyn's legacy of inspiration and unconditional love by paying it forward and helping to inspire others who are going through the same struggles that she faced. Most importantly, help me show Peter and Eloise just how much of an inspirational person their mom is and that, even over a year after her death, she is still inspiring and impacting the lives of so many.”
Cann’s goal is to raise $5,000 in 22 days, June 22nd being the day that Cann’s students at Canyon School in Pincher Creek will be cutting off her hair.
Through her donation, she has inspired her own students, three to four of whom have also decided to shave their heads as well.
Cann wants, “the students to learn about how people can make a difference, how even just one person can make a difference.”
All of the money donated on this GoFundMe fundraiser, as well as the money raised by her students will go directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Cann’s hair will be donated to Angel Hair for Kids .
