If you’re feeling the February blahs, maybe it’s time somebody w-intervened on your behalf.

The Crowsnest Cultural and Recreational Society (CanDo) has your back. On Feb. 19 and 20, CanDo will host Wintervention: the fourth iteration of the Pass’ annual winter carnival, which will feature family fun, revelry and host of new activities.

The winter fun kicks off Friday with a Legion Supper at either the Blairmore Legion at 5 p.m. or the Bellevue Legion at 6 p.m.

Juno Award winning artist Alberto San Martin is hosting a ukulele jam session at Elks Hall in Blairmore at 7 p.m.

Martin is Randal Shemko, Wintervention Committee chairperson’s, brother in law and agreed to come down from Calgary to participate in the winter fun. A native of Chile, Martin won a Juno award in 1993 for his work on the album “El Camino Real.”

Sign up early as there are a limited number of ukuleles and cost is by donation. Participants are being urged to bring an item for the food bank.

Rise and shine on Feb. 20 for a pancake breakfast at Lions Pride Hall in Blairmore at 8 a.m., and then run it off on a Sole Survivor Foot Race that leaves from the hall at 10:30 a.m.

The Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery is holding its annual Chili Bowl at 11 a.m. Choose a handcrafted bowl, load it with chili and then take it home as a Wintervention souvenir.

Head down to Gazebo Park in Blairmore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for fat bike demonstrations, hot dogs, a frying pan toss and a human dogsled race then hang out at the Orpheum Theatre for a screening of Finding Nemo at a discount price at 2 p.m.

A known lumberjack will be hosting a demonstration in Gazebo Park in Blairmore at 3 p.m.

“He’s a great big guy, I’ve been told,” said Shemko.

After chainsaw demonstrations, Shemko said representatives from the provincial forestry department are doing a presentation on chainsaw safety.

“There’s probably a few of us weekend chainsaw operators who don’t follow all the safety rules that we should,” he said.

Tickets are still available for a silent auction/dinner/dance to be held at Blairmore’s Elks Hall Saturday night and can be purchased at Scotia Bank. The theme of the evening is “into the future,” so if you come, come dressed up in something futuristic.

This year, CanDo pursued an aggressive marketing strategy and event sponsorships from businesses have increased, said Shemko.

“Even though the economic times here have been really tough for a lot of businesses, it’s been overwhelming how many contributions we’ve gotten,” he said.

All in all this could be the biggest Wintervention yet.

“I think lots of people are starting to understand and know about it,” said Shemko. “I think it’s come a long way since it was conceived.”

All proceeds from the event are going to CanDo for the eventual construction of a cultural and recreational hub in the community.
