EDC chairperson touts accomplishments

Last year was a busy one for the Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee (EDC).

March 9, at a Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon at The RumRunner in Coleman, Melanie Beals, EDC chairperson spoke about the committee’s 2015 achievements.

They made improvements to the municipal website, making it more tourism friendly, they published a two-page spread with a photo and editorial in Southwest Alberta Travel Planner.

They weighed in against AltaLink’s proposed expansion of power lines through Bellevue. They ordered the removal of damaged main street banners to enhance beautification of the community.

Perhaps most notably, they commissioned a 30-second TV commercial airing on Global Television in Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to promote the Pass.

It’s been widely circulated on the internet and will be on television starting the end of November.

In 2016, the committee will undertake a redesign and replacement of municipal banners to enhance tourism and community awareness, it’ll be developing a new tourism website at gocrowsnest.ca.

Finally, it will be revising sign and unsightly premises bylaws.

Speaking at the luncheon, Councillor Dave Filipuzzi praised the committee members for their recent accomplishments.

“I’d like to say thank you to the committee, council’s really excited about the direction that they’re going,” he said. “We’ve worked really hard and I think in the last little while we’ve really moved forward with great strides. On behalf of council I’d like to say thank you to all of you for the effort that you’ve done and for representing the committee.”

The EDC is made up of nine members of the community appointed by council. They include Beals, John Salus, vice chairperson, Andrew Fairhurst, Art Garland, John Redekopp, Richard Buckle, Jessica Atkinson, Joni MacFarlane, Oliver Strickland and council members Filipuzzi and Shar Cartwright.

Their key tasks include, economic development, marketing tourist attractions, new business opportunities and business retention and attraction.
