On Sept. 10, green thumbs from across the Pass gathered at the Crowsnest Museum for the Fall Community Plant Swap.

Why would the museum involve itself in the seemingly ahistorical world of plants?

Amy Rienzo, programmer for the Crowsnest Museum, gave the Pass Herald a few reasons:

First. “As the museum, we aim to bring programs to the community that they will be interested in and serve a greater purpose of heritage and community building,” she said. “The Pass has a history of gardening, both personal and community. Hosting the plant and seed swaps in our location is easily accessible, neutral and we have the capacity to put time into advertising and getting the word out.”

Second. “We want people to know that we are a space available for community use,” she continued. “Yes we are a museum, but we are also an available resource that might not immediately cross your mind.

Third. “Personally speaking I was involved in community food security (fresh food for all people regardless of income or social status) for about five years with a previous employer and this is an activity that I can easily jump aboard with.”

Last year was the first year the museum partnered with the Crowsnest Pass Community Garden Club. The club is officially part of the Crowsnest Agriculture Society, which provides space and other resources for its events.
