Just after 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was felt throughout the Elk Valley. People from Sparwood, Elkford, Fernie and Cranbrook reported feeling the quake that was strong enough to shake items off of the walls and put people on the edge of their seat.

The quake's epicentre was located North East of Cranbrook at latitude 49.9 degrees North and Longitude 114.9 degrees West, reaching a depth of 5 km.

The Federal Ministry says no damage was reported and doesn't suspect any would be with the small tremor.

In a report to B104 Total Country, Earthquake Seismologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, Honn Kao said, "I don’t think it’s common, though certainly it is not considered to be an exception. Inside the continent area the tectonic strands or tectonic forces have this slow accumulation and release process.”
